Where did you grow up?

Liz: I grew up in a beautiful town right along the Missouri River, in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

Rik: I will never grow up! But i've spent my childhood in a small town called Someren in the south of the Netherlands.

Eline: I’ve been born in the same small town in Someren as Rik, and I’ve grown up there too. But I must say we haven’t met there. Our childhoods were quite different.



Can you tell us about your musical background?

Liz: Music has been constant in my entire life. I began making up songs and singing since before I can remember. I remember the day my Mom asked if I wanted to start piano lessons; I was 7 years old and I was excited because I thought that singing was fun so piano must be really fun also. But I had no idea how much having those piano lessons would shape my entire life. I was really fortunate to have access to a great music program and amazing teachers all throughout my schooling. I pursued flute lessons in band and was first chair flutist in high school, and probably started “closet” songwriting with voice and piano in junior high. I never told anybody I wrote songs, not even until my second year in music school at CalArts, because I was always too embarrassed. But it was my third year at CalArts that I really embodied my art, I switched majors from voice to musical arts, which was a more open, build-your-own-program kind of a major. I studied world music from Indonesia, Africa, Bulgaria, and North India and I also studied songwriting. It was really the support I received at CalArts, along with the fact that I had been trained how to be a musician from the years I spent in lessons as a child, that allowed me to become the musician I am today.

Eline: I started singing in a choir when I was about seven years old. I was inspired by my dad. He was a singer in a blues rock band and he had a rehearsal room at my grandparent’s home. Here I could try out all kind of different instruments, like the keyboard, the drums and of course the microphone. At my other grandparent’s home there was a piano. My grandmother played and sang, directed a choir and also was a big influence on me. When I was about twelve years old we got her piano, because she was over 80 years old and couldn’t play that well any more. I started my piano lessons at that age. Began singing lessons at 15 and went to music school when I was 18.

Rik: At age 15 I got my first bass guitar and gained a lot of stage experience playing in several punk, hardcore and metal(core) bands for over 10 years. My dad plays guitar so i've always had a couple of those at my disposal. And Eline helped me a lot when started playing organ and piano about 2 years ago.


Can you remember the first time you decided you wanted to be a musician?

Liz: Always always always. It may have been my “secret dream” for a lot of my life, but it was when I was 21 years old that I decided to let go of all of my fear around it and really just go for it!

Eline: I always wanted to make music. Since I was little. Since I saw my dad on that stage and heard my grandmother play her piano.

Rik: Haha, good one! Let's see if i can locate that picture of me as a baby with a beautiful handmade Ibanez Musician on my lap! But it made me cry instead of the other way around. ;-)


Liz and Eline, at what age did you start singing?

Liz: I started taking voice lessons with my piano teacher when I was eleven. But I was always singing for as long as I can remember!

Eline: You’d have to ask my mother, I don’t really know. But I started singing with the choir when I was seven years old.


How many instruments do you play?

Liz: I always have to count: piano, acoustic guitar, voice, flute, ukulele & cajon (those are all the ones I would say that I play seriously) But I’m also learning how to play mandolin, bass, electric guitar, and the accordion!

Rik: About 6 I guess?

Eline: What he means to say is that we will play any instrument you put in our hands. Even if it’ll sound crappy :P just kidding of course. Riks main instrument is the bass and mine is the piano. But I must say, we’re getting pretty good with the ukulele. So I’d also say ‘about 6 I guess’ (counting piano, bass, drums, guitar, percussion, organ).


Which artist(s) inspired/inspire you in your life and what genres of music do you listen to?

Liz: I have always been inspired by badass female artists like Regina Spektor, Amy Lee, and Amanda Palmer and I draw a lot of inspiration from The Beatles and also classical artists such as Beethoven and Debussy. I love listening to other singer songwriters as well and was really inspired by a lot of the other artists I met at CalArts, such as Bianca Gisselle, Mischa Mandel, Tom Hatfield, and Anthony Starble to name a few, whom you should definitely check out! It was actually my friend Tom who introduced me to the music of Pomplamoose, which later led me to more amazing songwriters such as Lauren O’Connell, Julia Nunes, Danielle Ate The Sandwich, Ryan Lerman, and, of course, Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn. I love listening to indie dance music, and I’m currently super inspired by Avan Lava, Atlas Genius, Noah and the Whale, Beirut, and Chairlift.

Eline: That’s a tough one. From my childhood, a singer that always stayed with me was K.D. Lang, but I don’t listen to her any more. My musical taste was horrible when I was a child. From Spice Girls to Five and then a switch to Linkin Park and Papa Roach. Oops.. Now I have three musicians I must say that have my deepest respect; Matthew Bellamy of Muse, Amy Lee of Evanescence and Norah Jones.

Rik: Jessy Buglione of the band Lagwagon was a big inspiration, just as their singer Joey Cape. It ranges from punkrock to classical music. I don't care, as long as it sounds good!


Rik & Eline, how did you meet?

Eline: I was for about three years in a band called ‘Edgar’ with this guitarist called Menno. This band split up when I was about 24. A few years after that, he called me again. He found a bassist he wanted to make some music with and he asked me if I was interested in joining them. That bassist was Rik. Sadly that formation fell apart and we went our own ways.


When did you decide to create a group?

Rik: Pretty quick after that. I had some songs and needed a singer. But since I didn't want a real band I asked Eline. We just started to make videosongs inspired by Pomplamoose. And we are enjoying this course ever since!


Who chose the name "Ellow" and why?

Rik: Well, the working title for the songs I had was Ellow. It basically means nothing more than "Hi!" or in slang "What's up bro!?"

Eline: And I liked the sound of it. It was like saying hello to our viewers only with the name of our band.


I fell in love with Eline's voice. Did she immediately established herself as the lead singer of Ellow?

Eline: Aaawh. Alain you make me blush. Like Rik said. He already started working on some songs and needed a singer. So that automatically made me the lead singer. But… We just finished writing a song that Rik will sing, so I have to say that we don’t need to conform to this standard form of making music. I let Rik sing too :p or something that sounds like it.


Who wrote the lyrics to your songs?

Eline: It changes per song, but mostly we both have given our input on the lyrics.

Rik: We both do. I normally come with an almost complete song as a canvas and we start moving things around. Changing or completely rewriting lyrics.


Liz, As a music teacher and musician, how many songs have you recorded and written?

Liz: I’ve written dozens and dozens of songs, but not every song is actually worth being recorded or even written in the first place… But every song is an expression of art, and recording gives me a chance to share them! I’m fairly new to recording, but I’ve so far released a few singles and I’m excited to be working on an album currently (release date TBA!)

Eline: I will also start teaching this Tuesday ^^ pretty excited actually ;)


What/whom inspires your lyrics?

Liz: My lyrics are always inspired by life, and I realized that if I want to write good lyrics, I have to remain inspired in my life always. So I like to go to shows, see good movies, and write about my own life experiences and relationships. Also, I just love listening to lots and lots of music!


Your song 'I Love to be with you’ is very often shared on my page, it was covered by Nataly Dawn (from Pomplamoose). How did you meet?

Liz: I’ve been following Pomplamoose since college, my friend Tom was the first who showed me a few videos of theirs on YouTube, and they inspired me to continue making my own YouTube videos! I love their music and I supported Nataly’s Kickstarter to fund her debut album and in return she covered my song, which was basically a dream come true. I first met Jack and Nataly in person when I saw their show in San Francisco back in 2012, which was one of the first shows I went to after I moved in Sonoma. They are really awesome people.

Rik: May I add that I absolutely love that song and the way Nat and Ryan covered it! It must be so cool to have THEM to cover one of your tunes!!! Go Liz! Go Liz! :-)

Eline: Yeah I love that song too Both your and Nataly’s version. It’s basically the same song, but they really changed a lot. Liz, what did you think of that? Do you love their version too?

Liz: Haha, thanks guys! I’m glad you like it! I was completely stoked when I first heard their cover. I had no idea how different they were going to make it, but I absolutely loved it! It reminded me of 1980s music (which I completely love) and I was super stoked that Ryan and Nataly worked together on it! Ryan Lerman’s music is so amazing, and I’ve also been really inspired by his album Pinstripes, The Sky.

Did you ever think about handing one of your songs to another artists?

Liz: I’ve indeed thought about it! But mostly, I just love to collaborate!


How did Liz and Ellow met?

Eline: I think Rik got bored and started talking to Liz. She was just crazy enough to talk back ;)

Liz: Haha, basically! I met Rik and Eline through Patreon, which always just blows my mind. I’m so excited to be a part of the amazing community that is Patreon and I just love how it brings artists together. I also met Liz McBride (who I did my Christmas video with this year) on Patreon!


Who proposed the idea of a common video and who decided to cover a Pomplamoose song?

Rik: Liz was being really annoying and kept asking if we would do a collab so we finally said okay… haha, no just kidding! It came up when talking about videosongs and thought it would be a nice idea to team up. And since we all play a wide range of instruments it took more time to figure out who was going to play what than figuring out which song we would cover. So no fights! Haha, just long enthusiastic email conversations!

Eline: I saw the whole conversation after it was decided we would do a collab, but of course I couldn’t say no any more ;) or else my kneecaps would be busted. Just kidding (what are we, a duo of standup comedians now.. we have to keep our sarcasm in check Rik…) No Rik kept me posted and I love the idea they had. Of course it had to be a Pomplamoose song, they are such an inspiration to us. I was so happy Liz wanted to do a song from them too. Bust your kneecaps was my favorite but it was Liz that proposed that song.

Liz: We collectively decided that it would be awesome to collab and Pomplamoose was our first choice of a band to cover, almost as an homage to them. “Bust Your Kneecaps” was always a favorite of mine!


How was the recording for the duo and who made the final video?

Liz: The recording process was really fun! Rik would send me tracks to work with, and I’d record my parts and email them back! Rik ended up mixing and editing the final video, which was rad! Computer issues slowed the collab down a bit, but nothing can stop us! ;-)

Eline: We divided the instrumental parts (this came almost naturally, only I just had to do the drums, this was something I haven’t done before) and just started with the basics. Layer over layer we recorded our individual parts, with little comments to each other through the video’s. Mixing and editing the videosong was kind of a mess. With computers crashing and projects becoming corrupted. Liz had a lot of patience. Love her for that. Because that part of the project was Rik’s part. I think he still has nightmares.

Rik: I still wake up screaming in the middle of the night

Eline: That would be around 5AM for us.. ‘round 9pm for Liz.. I think.. The time difference was a head breaker too…

Rik: But worth it!


Liz, thanks to the pictures you mailed me, you have become the symbol of my pages. You may be the most watched singer with specs. How does all this attention feel?

Liz: I’ve always been so honored to be featured on Girl Singers With Glasses. So many of the artists on the page are so amazing! I just feel so blessed to be able to share my art and people actually watch it and support it! It feels amazing!


Liz and Eline, are your specs a complex or an asset? Has my page changed your opinion of glasses?

Liz: My glasses are definitely an asset, I’m legally blind without them (-5.75 prescription in both eyes!) It’s kind of funny, because when I was little, i really liked the look of glasses, I thought they made you look smarter, and most of my family had glasses. So I BEGGED to be able to get glasses! I didn’t really need them at first, but I think I may have forced my own prescription to get worse over the years. I do love my glasses, but I sometimes wear contacts as well.

Eline: I must say it did change my opinion. I hated my glasses. When you interviewed me earlier (july last year; Ellow) I told you briefly about the necessity of my glasses and injuring my good eye. Between the ages of 12 and 22 I didn’t need my glasses and was so happy. Because of that injury I now can’t do without and my bad eye is too weird for contacts. And sometimes I hate that.


Have you discovered singers through my page? If yes are there any, in particular, you may wish to work with?

Liz: It would be a dream come true to work with Danielle Ate The Sandwich! Her lyrics are hilarious and amazing and I love her videos!

Eline: I think they are all very talented. I love to see all those girls with different backgrounds and so many different glasses. I would love to work with any of them. When I have time, I listen to them and watch their video’s. There is one singer with glasses as an icon I loved before I knew of your blog, but I don’t know if you added her to your list: Melody Gardot.


If there was a international tour called "singer's with glasses," would you be honored to attend it?

Liz: That would be an AWESOME tour! Yes!

Rik: I'd buy glassed right away! Or maybe you should start a fb page: Male bassplayers without glasses? That would be an instant success! No? Dammit! Haha!

Eline: Of course! But I think there are many singers with glasses that sound very different. Do they fit together on a tour, I would wonder.

Rik: That would make the tour a lot more interesting. Especially if they started doing things together.


How important is your overall appearance?

Liz: Appearance is something that should never matter. I’m all about natural beauty and I think that all women who feel pressured to have a certain appearance don’t need the extra stress that it assumes. Love your body without judgement is what I always say!

Eline: Uhm.. not that important. I mean.. I shower and eh.. use makeup.. and so on.. but I don’t spend houuuuurs in front of the mirror. And I only go to the hairdresser once a year or something like that.

What plans do you have for 2014?

Rik: Record an EP, play some cosy shows, have fun, drink wine, be happy :-) At the moment we are working on some demo's for the new ep that will be released this year and a show we will play in the foyer of a theater this March. It will be something different than the livingroom shows we did earlier.

Eline: And don’t forget the Garden Sessions (or something like that). Like the Livingroomshows, but in the garden hehehe. Just.. keeping busy I guess.

Liz: Release a lot of original songs and make tons of videos on Patreon! I’m also planning on playing some shows, in person and on the internet via StageIt!


You posted the same video on your channel so which video would you prefer I post at the bottom of the interview? ;)

Rik: The one with the lowest amount of views. At the moment it's the video on liz her page with 150 views so it'd be the wisest choice.

Who is the real Emily Kopp?

What you see is what you get. There's only one version of me! I don't need much. People who make you happy, good food that keeps you healthy love that keeps you all warm inside, and good music. I try to appreciate the little things in life, always!


What are your goals/dreams in life?

My various goals/dreams include: traveling the world, collaborating with one of my favorite artists, sleeping on a tour bus (even just once), beating my mom in a cook-out, sky-diving, becoming fluent in Spanish, and building a successful full time career in music.


How long have you been singing for, and how did you learn how to do it?

I've been singing for as long as I can remember. It's something that came naturally. Learning to recognize, respect, and use my voice as an instrument is something that has been very beneficial. It's been a continuous learning process.


How has your life changed since becoming a musician?

I've acquired the skills to truly be autonomous and entrepreneurial in my career pursuits. I've always been self-motivated, but that work ethic has really grown since becoming a full time musician.


What singers, musician or otherwise, influenced you growing up?

I listened to a lot of pop music! (Backstreet Boys/Britney Spears). However, I was really into musicals -- like Annie, The Wizard of Oz, and Hair. I also really enjoyed a lot of the music that my parents were listening to like The Gypsy Kings, Carlos Vives, ABBA, and The Beatles.


Where do you get the inspiration for your music?

I draw from all sorts of things - from the bigger "picture" of relationships and feelings, to more focused and simple ideas, like a specific place or moment in time. It all comes very sporadically though.


I know that you’ve got a lot of music, there any songs of yours that you don’t like listening to?

I'm proud of the work I've done so far. However, I think it's natural to want to move on from the old, with the creation of the new. It's always very exciting playing new songs.


What is your compositional process? Lyrics or music first?

I'm very driven by melody. Typically the music comes first for me.


Speaking of lyrics, your voice is really beautiful. Most of your songs rely on the strength of your voice. Do you try to give messages in your songs?

To me, there is nothing quite like a good lyric. While my voice does carry quite a bit, I do aim to write songs that affect people from a lyrical sense. I'm always working towards becoming a more developed writer.


How did the recording process go for 'Serendipity Find Me'?

I't was a slow and steady process. Patience is a virtue, haha! Justin Beckler (producer) and I really worked on figuring out the right sound for the album - arrangement/ instrumentation/production wise. For me, it was truly a learning experience.


The first single 'When We Fight ' just came out a little while ago. What's the story behind that song as your first one out?

It is a very honest and real moment in time. The most beautiful relationships and love stories have hard times too - and this was just one of them.


Can you describe the process of turning this songs into a video?

I thought that depicting the story through children would be lighthearted and endearing. It took the heaviness off of the song a bit, and turned it into something really cute!


Have you developed a new video?

I'll be releasing a lyric video for the next single. There are certainly music video plans in the near future, though!


Where will your video be promoted? I’m excited to see whatever you do next!

Plans for the next video release are TBD.


I notice that you seem to be wearing your glasses in a lot of your pictures. Is there a story behind them?

Laziness! After awhile, I just stopped wanting to deal with contacts - especially on the road. Eventually, the glasses became a full-time commitment :)


I interviewed Sarah Blacker and Misty Boyce last month and they was talking about their glasses, 'I choose to let my ears and heart do the seeing when I'm on stage' or 'they’ve become my “thing”'. how would you define your style about them?

To be honest, I've never thought too deeply about it. I think it's cool that they've become a part of my brand. I wouldn't mind taking them off on stage every now and then to rock out - but then I wouldn't be able to see the set list, haha.


In general, are you satisfied with your music and image, or would you like to change something?

I'm very proud of my music so far, and am looking forward to growing as an artist. As far as my image - I'm a confident in my own skin and style - and I hope that it shows in a positive way.


Is hast already encountered some of singers shared on my blog? (Cossbysweater, Ingrid Michaelson, Hannah Winkler, The Empire Lights, Giulia Spallino.....)

Have I encountered any of them? Well, I listen to a lot of Ingrid Michaelson - but we've never met. I saw Hannah Winkler play a house show last year, with what is now "Secret Someones". They are really good. I recently saw Sara Bareilles perform in Orlando, and I believe Misty Boyce was playing in her band.


Who are some of your favorite performers to watch?

John Mayer, Sara Bareilles, Grace Potter, Lissie...to name a few. I also recently saw an Imagine Dragons concert. They blew me away!


Any plans for a tour in Europe soon? Which country would you play first?

No European plans as of now. But stay tuned!


What are the four things you must have while on the road?

Deodorant, iPhone, boots, Gillette razor.


What’s next for Emily Kopp?

I'm currently writing a lot. There is a lot of touring in store for 2014. I look forward to releasing new music as well!

Where did grow up?

In a suburb of Boston called, Wellesley, MA


Who are your inspirations and your favorite bands/singers?

Joni Mitchell is my biggest inspiration as a vocalist, as well as Leslie Feist, Paul Simon and the prog-rock band, Yes to name just a few.


If you weren't singing, what would you be doing?

Healing. Being a clinical psychologist or a healer of some sort.


Who else in your family plays music and what they did to encourage you?

nobody - though my mother sang to me as a child. My father and I used to sit together and listen to his vast record collection which is now housed in my living room!


What genre of music can't you stand to listen to?

I've never been a fan of punk or hardcore music. Too much sonic input!


Your voice is the thing that I noticed first, recognizable and overwhelming, do you consider it as an instrument?

Absolutely, and furthermore, my body as the home of my instrument. If I'm not in tune, nor will my voice be. I've always considered myself as an instrumentalist with my voice - I love to improvise, and experiment melodically as well as with the different sounds and timbres I can produce.


Do you prefer writing music or lyrics?

I began writing as a poet as a young child. I always though I'd be a writer of short stories. I love to write music, but I can't stand writing down the notes. I've never been much of a musical theorist, but I do like to write down words.


You write lyrics of all your songs, how are you inspired?

I am inspired primarily by my experiences as a growing and learning woman, and also by those who are close to me, or who have had a profound impact on my life.


What would you say are your strong points?

My sense of humor, (completely sarcastic and goofy) my ability to make up songs on the spot, and perhaps my eye for the aesthetic in home-decorating and organizing.


I listen to your music since 3 or 4 years (you can read the first post here). How have you changed in the last four years?

I am much more confident in my voice as an artist, and my believe in the message that my songs portray. I feel that music is a gift, and each time I get on stage, I present it that way. My voice is stronger, and so is my songwriting and musicianship. I am much less afraid and much more grateful.


Can you give us details of past singing experiences (tour, meets)?

I can give many! One of my most memorable gigs was opening for America at the Lowell Summer Music Series. They were so nice, and I got to sing 'Horse With No Name' with them on stage during their encore. I grew up listening to their music, so this was surreal. I had a similar experience when opening for Paula Cole, as well as Rusted Root.


You writing and recording lots of new songs, a new album will be released in 2014?

I'm not sure yet if there will be a full length album released, though I do have enough new songs to record one. I will definitely at the very least, release some singles.


You are nominee by New England Music Awards to be ‘Female Performer of the Year,’ & for Song of the Year for ’Shiver,’ from your latest release ‘Precious Little Things’. Are you enjoying?

Very much so! I actually won, 'Female Performer of the Year' last year, but this year, along with single of the year, I'm nominated as, 'Songwriter of the Year' - folks can vote at http://www.nemusicawards.com/nominees


When were you most satisfied in your job?

Every time I'm on stage. The other work is what's difficult, taxing, and stressful, and at times even hopeless. When I'm on stage, that's what I've been striving for with all of the other steps in place. The lights are shining down, and I'm giving my gift of song, and hoping that people connect.


Have you ever been signed up by a record label?

This year, I was briefly signed with a collective called Big Crush Records, who unfortunately closed their doors this December.

Your glasses are no longer part of your identity as singer. They became annoying? You no longer want to be identified to them?

I have actually never really performed with them, save just a few gigs. I used to wear contacts on stage, but now, I go glasses-less. I wear them in my every day life, but I choose to let my ears and heart do the seeing when I'm on stage.


In general terms, how important are visuals to you?

I'm not sure what you mean by this - image as a performer, or visuals in life? I think an image must fit the artist. You have to be comfortable in what you wear. What you wear on the outside often reflects how you feel on the outside.


What else can we expect from you in the future?

I have plans for more national (and hopefully international) touring coming up soon, some songs that will be on TV and in movies, and another music video in the new year.


Any plans for a tour In France?

I would love to tour France.

So is Sarah Starr your real name? Or a stage name?

My real name is Sarah Reeve, and I was signed as a solo artist as Sarah Reeve for a few years when I was a teenager so I wanted to change my name to something more vibrant and catchy and have a fresh start with my new name.


Where did you grow up?

Queensland, Australia. By the beach!


At what age did you start singing?

I have been singing as long as I have been speaking. My parents put me in piano lessons when I was 4, I was dancing on stage when I was 2, busking with my sister when I was 12 and performed in musical theatre from the age of 7. I've always had a career in music, from gigging covers, to busking, to releasing my own original music, to songwriting…


What and or who, are some of your musical influences?

Michael Jackson is my biggest influence and inspiration. He changed the music industry and his music is so incredible, not to mention his dancing and his style! And I also love The Beatles and Coldplay.. Oh and John Mayer and Norah Jones.. there's too many to name!!


How did you get the idea to create a group?

I was a solo artist and I wasn't happy with the direction my team was going in, so I wanted a fresh start and formed The Empire Lights with Ronan.


How did you choose the name?

We had a different name initially, which everyone hated, so then with some friends, we had some drinks, wrote loads of names on a whiteboard in our studio and joined the words Empire and Lights together. Funnily though, I alllllllways wanted a band with the name empire or lights in it, so it made sense to put the 2 together!


Have you had previous experience as a singer? Can you give us details of past singing experiences?

I've had singing lessons since I was 14 and grew up performing in musicals. I was songwriting since the age of 7 and recording my first CD at the age of 15. Then I got signed by a European company when I was still a teenager and lived for a few years touring, releasing, recording and doing it all from radio, festivals, TV, school gigs.. It was great and very exciting living the life, but I was lonely, and always wanted to be in a band so that's why I decided to start a fresh and create a team around me that wanted exactly what I wanted.


Do you play any instrument in the band?

Piano is my main instrument and I have also had extensive training in flute and violin. I want to learn the saxophone and cello!


Do you write all the lyrics of the songs?

Yes I write all the lyrics. I don't feel honest representing myself as a singer, singing someone else's story… unless I could relate to it!


What do each members of the group contribute?

There's only 2 set members in The Empire Lights. We've had musicians come and go, helping us out with gigs and recordings.. A great friend of ours, Barry, our old bass player, recently left as he has started a career as an electrical engineer, but we're all still keen to perform and record together one day! For Ronan and myself, it was always only ever going to be music… The Empire Lights is our baby.


I read that a EP was being prepared, when does it come out?

We don't have a release date set but big things are planned!


Can you explain a bit about this EP?

We're still in recording stage, so it's only early days!


Is your album soon due?

Our plan is to record 3 EPs over the space of 1 year, and then release an album after that… but plans change and anything could happen!


On your website, there are links to music and fashion (Favorite fashion blog, Fashion Sarah...). Who's idea was it?

I have always loved fashion. Being on stage from such a young age, I always had to think of my appearance and be aware that the person in the back row of the theatre should be able to see my outfit. I've always loved sequins and glitter, anything with a bit of sparkle or shine! And Michael Jackson is my biggest idol so he inspires my fashion in a way too! I started the blog because I love getting dressed up, and we go to so many events and gigs, I thought it would be fun to show everyone what I wear every now and then. I also make a few clothes, so it's exciting showing people my creations!


Speaking of fashion, do you wear glasses for fashion or are they prescription?

If I didn't wear my glasses, I would break my neck! I've been wearing glasses since I was 7, and before then, I couldn't see properly!


Why didn't you wear your glasses for the first video, do you prefer contacts?

I sometimes wear contacts, depending if my outfit suits glasses ;)


What do you think of this blog and have you discovered some singers?

It's a great blog! Any chance to support other musicians is amazing.


Are you open to travelling to any location for show?

Yes, I travelled all across Europe and Australia for performing! I hope we can tour Canada and the USA this year!


If you weren't singing, what would you be doing?

I would be dead.


What do you hope for 2014?

To gain new fans who love our music and our style. To release 3 EPs and for them to receive a lot of radio play and their music videos to generate a lot of views and plays on music video channels… For our songs to be featured in movies, TV, ads, or to be in the process of that happening… To support a bigger band and to go on tour… to basically keep building the momentum of our music and our fan base!!! Oh and to meet Paul McCartney ;) ;)

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico


When have you start studies music?

I started taking piano lessons at 5


What was your after-school job?

I started making money playing music at 14, so I was lucky enough not to have to get a crappy job.


When and how did you become interested in pursuing a music career?

I was obsessed with Mariah Carey and wanted her life, and then when I was 9, I saw a movie called “A Thing Called Love” and that made me aware that being a singer and songwriter was something you could do.


You began as the keyboardist for The Naked Brothers Band, now we often heard the guitars....

I’m not sure that I understand the question! I like playing both keyboards and guitar…guitar has just been more readily available to me the past year.


What is your favorite instrument?

DRUMS!!


What are the different types of genres that you sing in?

Ooooh I don’t know! I love almost every genre and try my best at all of them!


If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be?

Country. Or super POP like Lady Gaga.


The list of singers with whom you have worked are many, I quote a few: Ingrid Michaelson, Bess Rogers and all the band Secret Someones (Hannah Winkler, Lelia Broussard..), recently Sara Bareilles and many others, are you again open to the idea of collaborating with other female singers?

Yes! I love working with other musicians, and especially other women! It’s super fun and has a different kind of energy.


You released your first self-titled album in 2010 (Misty Boyce), your new 'Tough Love EP' in 2013. What is the title of your next album and when it will be selling?

I don’ t have a name for it yet but it will be out this year! We’re in the mixing process now…

Do you think the songwriting has changed for you like as a solo singer-songwriter?

Most definitely! I think my songwriting changes based on who I’m listening to at the moment! And I definitely aspire to simplifying…becoming more and more honest and less focused on writing a “cool” song.


What was your style when you were teenager?

I was trying to sound exactly like Tori Amos.


Are you satisfied with your music and image, or would you like to change something about it?

I think it’s natural never to be satisfied fully, but in general I’m happy to continue searching for myself, in life and music, and I hope that’s conveyed in whatever image I portray.


You started with your glasses, then with your contact lenses, and now your red glasses are your logo... A comment about that for my site?

My red glasses were a gift from a dear person in my life and I’m so happy they’ve become my “thing”. I like wearing glasses more in general because I feel like my eyes get more oxygen.


Have you developed a new video and when will your video be promoted?

I have not! This is something I will do soon in support of the new record.


Do you have plans for 2014?

I’m doing a small tour in the spring in the US and another tour in Germany in September. Other than that I’m trying to focus on finishing up this record, making some videos, and getting it all out there!


What would you like to say to all your fans?

I’m so incredibly grateful to all those out there who support me. You motivate and inspire me to keep going and I can’t thank you enough for that!

Where did grow up?

I grew up on a farm in Alachua, FL outside of Gainesville and then moved to Carmel, CA when I was 11.


I have read that you started studying music at the age of 11, can you explain your musical background?

I actually started singing in church and school choirs around age 6 and started playing classical violin at age 9 and was in youth orchestra until the beginning of high school. I started doing musical theatre when I was 11 and started playing the guitar and writing songs to perform after that although I had been writing little songs with my sister since we were about 3.


Have you always enjoyed the art of music?

Yes! We didn't have cable TV on the farm (only two channels) so most of my entertainment was my parents record collection which included Elton John, The Beatles, The Eagles, The Platters, The Archies, Strauss, Mozart, Tchaikovski and my grandparent's Roger's and Hammerstein musicals on VHS. I would listen and dance and sing along and play with the speed of the records.


Whom or where do you get your inspiration for your songs?

The biggest influences to my actually making music and being a singer/songwriter were first Hanson and then Brandi Carlile who I incidentally discovered because she was opening for Hanson! I loved Hanson's melodies and harmonies and was inspired that they were so young and still doing it and Brandi's raw emotion and passionate powerful voice resonated with me and still does. There are many artists I am inspired by including Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Rufus Wainwright, Simon & Garfunkel, Ray Lamontagne, David Gray, Katie Herzig, The Lumineers, and Mumford & Sons to name a few. The inspiration for the content of my songs comes from my life. Things I feel and think about, people I love, things I'm working through. There is a Victor Hugo quote that says it very well: ‘Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.’


Your new album "The Left Atrium" was released in July, is there one song on this album that you especially love?

Thats a little like asking someone to pick their favorite child. I love them all for different reasons and they are so different! I love "Walk With You" because it's uplifting and has fiddle and banjo in it! I love "Not Your Fault" because its a love letter to myself as well as the person it's about and I especially like the musical arrangement on that one - the string plucking and building background vocals and tuned wine glasses. My producer Jeff Zacharski was great at diving into what I was trying to do with each song and bringing fun, interesting things to the table. Another favorite I'll mention is the last track "How Much?" because of its simplicity and the breathtaking instrumental departure that the wonderfully talented musicians who I'm blessed to call friends and who played on my album created with my guidance describing what I wanted it to feel like.


Did you write them in chronological order?

No. I think the first song may be the last one I wrote actually!


The song 'Not your fault' is your first song with a wonderful video. Do you have and idea what song might be your next single?

I have some other video ideas


Do you have a web site to publicize your first E.P. (Brief Sounds EP & Ghost In The Corner EP)?

You play with another band called "Alix and Kris" with your twin sister, can you tell us more about it?

Its Kris&Alix - but either search would probably get you there. I have always sung with my sister - having twin voices makes harmonizing easy and awesome! We made it official a couple of years ago when we started working and writing with producers/singer/songwriters Morgan Taylor Reid and Alexander Cardinale. We released a single called "Chase Me"


Has your sister influenced your career as a singer/songwriter?

She definitely influenced my love of harmonies! She made them possible and they came much more naturally to her so I learned from her and I get feedback from her on my songs. She is a talented writer herself so often has great suggestions.


How would you classify—if you can—your genre music?

I think its folk/america/rock or pop with a little taste of country sometimes. Could be crossover country.


Are there any plans for a international tour in the future?

I am actually going to be on the Songs&Whispers Tour in Europe in April 2014. The dates and venues are not completely solidified yet but I will be playing in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands and I believe France.


Where would you most like to perform? France?

I would love to perform in France! I've been there and its beautiful! I love the style, food, language, and music!


Many singers wear glasses, basically 24/7, but you take them off to share your music. Will you change your mind for the next video?

I don't often wear glasses - only when I'm going to the theatre usually so I can see farther more clearly and I like to have my eyes clearly visible and accessible when performing because they are the window to the soul! I did wear glasses for part of the "Not Your Fault" video though! When I'm brushing my teeth.


In general terms, how important are visuals to you?

Visuals are a big part of music for me. Whenever I hear a song or am writing or singing, I have imagery in my head and it can be a strong influencer in connecting emotionally to a song or piece of music which is why soundtracks are so loved. Music does the same for imagery. Its a symbiotic relationship.


What are your plans for 2014?

I am currently competing in and plan to win an international competition on ArtistSignal.com/krisangelis (I'm #3 where people can vote for me once an hour and the artist with the most votes at the end of the month wins $10,000 which I will use to fund my other plans which include: Playing in the Northwest of the US in early February A California tour with Jon Bryant in early March The European tour in April Writing and recording a follow-up EP which will include musicians from my travels

Where were you born, where have you lived?

Nicola: We were born in Norfolk, England but lived in Germany for 12 years.  We only moved back to England when we were 17.


How did you choose the name of the group and is that your real last name?

Helen: Yes it's our real last name! Me and Nicola played as a duo in college and that's what we were known as. We wanted to change the name but it just sort of stuck.


Have you studied music together?

Helen: Yes we both did a music degree at university.


How many instruments do you play?

Nicola: I play guitar, sing and I am learning to play the piano.
Helen: I play guitar, flute, sing and play a bit of harp.


Have you any other solo projects outside the group?

Nicola: Yes, we both write songs  for  the band and also our own compositions.  It's hard to find the time but we hope to be recording songs for our additional   project  'IamUnicorn' in the next few months.


When did you decide to create this band?

Helen: In 2011 we first began to talk about the idea. None of us were really performing at that time and  having heard some of our early songs, Marc and Sam asked us if we would like to become a four piece.


For the genre of music you want play, who decides what kinds of instruments you will need?

Nicola: It depends on the song really. We are very lucky to have Sam and Marc who are brilliant musicians and can pick up  most instruments. We  try to add only what is needed to enhance the songs.


Listening to your song we are charmed by the sweetness and the melancholy. What your life's theme song could be?

Nicola: Thank you! It's hard to say. I love songs that make me feel something,  whether  happy or sad. I'm not sure what my life's theme song would be.... the new Keaton Henson song 'You' seems to strike a real chord with me at the minute.


Writing the words to songs is often thought of as personal. What is your process for writing songs ? Do you write together?

Helen: We often begin songs alone and then bring them to the band to work on. Our lyrics are personal to us and it can be hard to explain what our songs are about. We'd like to think they can be interpreted in different ways.

 
The boys are they an important part of the group ?

Helen: Absolutely. They add so much in terms of instrumentation and musicality. We're beginning to write together more as a whole band, which is great and brings a new dimension to our sound.


What are your musical influences and what music are you listening to right now?

Nicola: Right now I'm listening to Rae Morris, Keaton Henson, Ella Fitzgerald, First Aid Kit and Daughter. As a band we have very diverse influences.


You have saved a E.P. called Philosolove. A new album will be recorded soon? If yes, can you tell us more about that?

Helen: We are working on a new E.P that should be ready in the new year.  We're looking forward to getting it out there and will hopefully be releasing a single in the next couple of months.

You are twins but only Nicola wears glasses. It's just for recognizing you  is she the most myopic of you both?

Nicola: I'm definitely the blinder out of the two of us!

Helen: We think about what we wear for photo shoots and gigs but not really more than that. We're quite a casual, laid back band!

Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in a small town near Bergamo, in the north of Italy, but now I live with my boyfriend and our dog in the city. It 'a very beautiful town, but quite small, and like all cities has its pros and cons.


How long do you play music and how did you get started?

I started singing very late, when I was 20 years old.. I was just shy and I could not really sing in front of other people. When I broke up with my ex-boyfriend, as all women (do) when there is a big change in their life, I realized that I had to start using this gift I had: I took courage and began singing in a gospel choir. Then came my acoustic trio (vocal and guitar), a funk band, a reggae band ... and after all this, I discovered my songs.


What is your musical background?

I listen to all kinds of musical genres: from 70s rock to 90s hip hop, from dance music to folk, from soul to pop ... I think all genres have their meaning and their path, and every sound can give me something. All can inspire me.


What music are you listening to now?

My musical guide is and will always be Lauryn Hill. But now I really like reggae music (my boyfriend is a reggae dj and I really like the vibes) and electronic music contaminated with soul ... by chance, do you know Delilah or Little dragon? That kind of stuff.


The first song ever sung?

The first song ever sung in my life in a "serious" occasion was a gospel song: I do not remember the title, but I remember that I was very nervous and my legs were shaking (and I always looked at EYES Director of the Choir). Instead, the first recording experience was disastrous ... After have hearing my voice, I burst into tears and ran away from the studio!


Tell me about your writing process. Do you co-write or do you write alone?

I usually write alone, in my room, in my kitchen, on my bed, on a bus .. They are all very PERSONAL thoughts, which relate to my life and my experience. For this reason, I write alone. Once I figured out what I want to say / write, I begin to give it a SHAPE and A MELODY. It all happens very naturally and when I realize that it’s not like so, I start over.


How many songs have you recorded?

Maybe 10-12 songs, I don’t remember exactly.


A LP?

Now, I'm working on my first EP: it will consist of 5+1 tracks and it will be released next spring. It was a very long and hard work for me, but I'm really proud of what I have become.


Is that you have a website to disseminate your music?

I have my website www.giuliaspallino.com but for now it contains only all my social links (fb, twitter, instagram, pinterest..)


What has been your most memorable experience thus far?

The most amazing experience was a very personal one (as opposed to what you might think). My uncle asked me to sing a song at my aunt’s funeral.. I sang Jeff Buckley's Halleluja: it was the most strong and intense moment of my life. For the first time I really sang from the heart. My broken heart.


Are there any plans for a tour in the future?

By now there isn't anything concrete, but when my EP will come out, there will be some promotional dates for sure.


Which country would you play first?

First of all I'd like touring my country and let Italy know my music. Obviously, I want also to bring my music abroad and everywhere :)


Is there anyone you'd want to tour with?

Regarding Italian artists, I'd like to open the concert of Meg (highly recommend). Regarding foreign artists instead, my dreams are about Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, the queens of nu soul. But they’re only dreams, you know :)


Like all the singers on this blog, you wear glasses. Are they real or only for fashion?

Unfortunately they’re real cause I'm a little bit blinded :)


What's next step for you now?

Next step is finishing the video we're shooting for my first single, then I’ve got to finish my whole EP and continue writing as much as possible.

Is Valarie Mulberry is your real name?

Yes, it is. Most people with my first name spell it "Valerie" but my mom is dyslexic and dyslexics tend not to be good spellers. When I was born she asked a nurse to tell her how to spell it. The nurse wrote down about five different spelling variations of my name. My mom liked the one with two "a's" in it, as opposed to the typical spelling with two "e's." My last name was changed from a Spanish name three generations ago when that line of my family tree came from Mexico.


Where were you born and where have you lived?

I was born in Portland, Oregon but my parents moved to the Oregon Coast when I was 2 years old. I grew up in the mountains on the Oregon Coast with a river in the back yard and train tracks in the front. I lived on the Island of Maui, Hawaii for three and half years, then I moved to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for two years. Vietnam provided a lot of interesting experiences. I rode my motorbike around the city, sang in a rock band for a time, made some wonderful friendships, taught English as a Foreign Language and did my best to learn Vietnamese. I had quite a few comical mishaps because it is a tonal language and hard to get the hang of. After Vietnam, I moved back to Hawaii for two years and then to the San Francisco Bay Area for two years. I now live in Santa Barbara, California.


How long have you played music and how did you get started?
I have played guitar, which is my main instrument, for almost 17 years and have been performing for ten years now. I was lucky that my dad played guitar when I was growing up so I learned a few chords from him. He played a lot of top hits from the 1960s, stuff from the Beatles, Otis Redding, Peter Paul and Mary and Bob Dylan. "Louie, Louie" by the Kingsmen and "Gloria" by Van Morrison were the first songs that I learned on guitar. I really didn't get serious with guitar until adulthood though.


First song ever sung?

Probably "Crawdad Song" which is an old folk song that is in the public domain. No one knows for sure who wrote it. My dad used to sing it when I was a kid. It's sort of a fun kids song. I actually re-interpreted it for myself and I sing it at gigs sometimes.


Who is your inspiration?

Anyone seeking truth and living what I call "the life of an artist." I think it is a really beautiful journey to dedicate oneself to an artistic passion. Art is a great method for healing one's self and usually results in also helping others to heal.


What are your favorite artists right now and why?

I am really digging Valerie June and also the Alabama Shakes right now. I like Ben Howard. There's a cool San Diego duo that I played a show with called "The Lovebirds" that are amazing. I love Tift Merritt and the Be Good Tanya's. They have a bit of a rootsy sound but it is contemporary too. Van Morrison is probably my favorite singer-songwriter, if I had to choose. I just love the vibration that he puts out. I also like some of the stuff that can be heard on the radio like Florence and the Machine, Adele and David Gray.


Can you describe your music?

I probably can't describe it very well. That is something that I have a hard time with. It's really hard to express sound accurately in words. My short answer is usually "eclectic singer-songwriter" or "jazzy but not jazz, bluesy but not blues, a little folky but not folk, country-ish but not country, a little bit rock." It really depends on the song though. I tend to write in slightly different genres but it is still coming from me so it has the common thread of sounding like me, of course.


What is the inspiration for your songs?

It really depends on what I am processing spiritually and emotionally at the point in time that I write a song. But insomnia has been good for my creativity. I like the solitude of night-time. I find that is when the songs come to me.


Where are you at with the new album? Is it all finished?

I am almost finished with it. I have about three more sessions to finish the mixing and mastering. I will be finished with the mastering by mid-November. I will have a slightly delayed release though, because I want to plan some promotion. It will be released February 20th, 2014. I am really excited about it. I have some great musicians playing on it and I love every note of the entire album. I have vintage organs on it, a fabulous back up singer and some really great guitar solos by my guitarist/producer. We started recording it fifteen months ago, so we really took our time. I am really happy with the producer that I chose to work with and cannot wait to share it with everyone.


Where do you buy your music?

I buy actual CD's. I love to listen to them in my car or when I am cleaning the house. I mostly buy them at live shows to support the artists. I am not into the mp3 thing yet. The sound quality for mp3's is not as good as CD's either. So I have not really gotten into the iTunes thing much yet.


Any loves other then music?

I love anything to do with culture and learning about how culture operates on us and how it changes or doesn't change. I like to learn why people behave the way that they do. I have an insatiable desire to keep learning. I love reading and I stay up to date on current events. I love to have good conversations with friends. I also love animals and do animal rescue when I am able.


Where would you most like to perform?

Right now, I would most like to perform a full length gig with an awesome five piece band backing me up in front of five thousand people in an older restored theater. One of those places with great architecture and old red velvet seats.


Any plans for a tour?
I am in the beginning stages of formulating a plan to play some shows in LA, San Diego and San Francisco after my CD is released. I am not sure if it can officially be called a "tour" or not but I will be getting out of my little hub of Santa Barbara much more often. I would like to book some shows in Oregon too and start moving up and down the West Coast much more.


For the new videos, will you keep your glasses?

I think so. Probably about half and half.


Where do you hope to be by 2014?

I want to be making an income from my music, whether that be from film, TV and advertisement placements or from playing live. I want to get an awesome live backing band. Currently, I mainly play with an electric guitarist backing me and that is very fun but it also feels exhilarating to play with a full band. Ideally, I would like to make back the amount I spent on recording my album and just keep playing better and better shows and keep connecting with audiences.

Allison Goertz

Allison Goertz is a folk singer songwriter based in LA.

She has written original songs since childhood. She writes beautiful nerdey love songs posted on youtube since 2011. She's singing about hobbits, dungeons and dragons or real life feelings.

Her band project is called Cossbysweater. She starts it with her friend Megan Barret who sings backing vocal. Megan left the band few month later.

Allie decided to crowd-fund her first album, promoting herself with a brilliant 'Give Us Your Money' song.

Laia Vehí

Laia Vehí is a singer/songwritter born in Figueres (Girona, Spain).

She began her studies in 2007 at the conservatory in Barcelona. Her desire is to studies in Jazz. She has a very personal voice and works as a songwriter.

Laia performs songs for the films 'Altres direccions' directed by Arón Sánchez and 'The BodyPhones' by Sergi Ramis and she could be found on the terraces of some bars in the city with the guitarist Iago Valencian Aguado.

Emma Nadine Stevens is a folk/country/pop singer-songwritter from Surrey (a country in the South East of England UK).

Emma started music when she was 3, when she was bought her first guitar. After many years of training classically on piano and cello, she's writing hundreds of songs and began her career as a professional songwriter.

Julia Nunes

Julia Nunes is a songwriter/singer from Fairport, New York.

Nunes started piano lessons at age seven before switching to the guitar in her teens. She started writing songs at age 14 and began playing the ukulele and guitar in 2005.

You are currently in Texas, what city did you grow up?

I grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas. I now live in Austin.

What kind of music do you listen to today?

A combination of a lot of old and new music.


What is your favorite album ever?

I could never pick just one.


You bring your blues/folk with an incredible beautiful voice. When did you start singing?

When I was 14 or so. But never really took it seriously until the last few years.


What made you decide to create music?

It's just something that comes out of me whether I want it to or not.


Are your songs mostly fictional or autobiographical?

Most are autobiographical.


How many album have you recorded?

One Solo, and two with other bands, one of which was an EP.


Your new album is about Saturn. Why did you choose this theme?

It's about Saturn's Return. Every 27 years Saturn returns to the same place it started it's cycle around the earth. Astrologically speaking it's supposed to usher you into a different phase of life. The first 27 years being from childhood to adulthood. I just turned 27 last month and all these songs seemed to be in preparation for this new stage of my life.

The songs range from less than a year old to 10 years old.

What city did you grow up?

I grew up in a very small southern town called Bainbridge in Southeast Georgia.


How old were you when you started getting involved in music?

My father is a band director for the high school I attended so I have always been surrounded around music. I started playing the trumpet actually when I was 6 years old and I picked the guitar up when I was 15. Song-writing followed suit when I was 16 years old. I had a little underground band for two years. We thought we were rock stars playing loud music in a church basement. It wasn’t until college that I started developing my own sound and playing live.


Is what you studied music or did you learn on your own?

I was in band in high school and like I said my father was a band director so I studied it a bit but the art form of what I create is just something I learned myself.


How would you describe your music?

My music is a combination of honesty, real life events with a base for folk acoustic music. It’s very much infused with ambient sounds and a little play on reverb and echo.


You written your own songs but you have also recorded some covers (Rihanna, Ellie Goulding, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Drake and many others), who inspires you musically?

Musically – everyone really. I listen to just about every genre of music. Right now my biggest influences are people like Daughter, William Fitzsimmons and my all time favorite group Paper Route. Seriously, check them out. They are the reason I dove deeper as a song-writer.


And in life?

Oh, in life. That’s a tough one. My parents. I know cheesy but they seriously have taught me so much and continue to influence my life positively.


I know you have not only one, but two EPs in preparation, can you tell us a little more about this?

'Confessional' is an electronic based EP that focuses on tracks I’ve found throughout the inter webs and used to create what you would call vocal edits. All of these tracks were available for free download from the original artist and the EP itself will be free when it drops on September 18 on my bandcamp at http://rachaelward.bandcamp.com/

'Where Lovers Meet' is more of the folk/ambient genre. It’s a compilation of songs I’ve been writing for the past year and a half. They flow in a series and reflect on love, relationships, how they sometimes work and sometimes fail. Both Confessional and Where Lovers Meet have that theme, which I am very proud of – they tell a story and they will make you feel and think. I’m most excited about what direction will take that.


Are there any plans for a tour in the future?

Well I hope to get more plugged into the Atlanta music scene in Georgia. As far as in full, we’ll just have to see.

When did you start wearing glasses?

I believe it was when I was in middle school. I noticed I was getting really bad headaches so naturally I went to get an eye exam done and sure enough – glasses. I suddenly could see the detail on tress and see people again.

Ellie Makes Music

Ellie James (Ellie Makes Music) is a singer-songwriter based in Cardiff (UK).

Her voice is really amazing and her lyrics are beautiful.

She made her musical debut in 2009 as part of Swn Festival.

In 2012, she won The Stage for Singer-Songwriters competition as part of the Cardiff Music Festival and consequently has become a name to watch in 2013.

Renata Novo

An interview with Renata Novo, one of the most promising new talents of Lithuania.
I just want to thank her for this wonderful idea and prompt answers.


Is Renata Novo is your real name?

Renata Novo is my stage name. It`s a shorter version of my real Lithuanian name Renata Novogreckaite. I have many international friends, who studied in my country or I met them during my travels abroad. For foreigners it was really difficult to pronounce my real surname, so I just made it shorter. By the way, Latin expression "de Novo" means "New" and my name Renata translated from Latin means "Born Again". So choosing this stage name Renata Novo I`ve showed to the world that I`m starting my NEW life as a musician, who is not affraid to create unique and NEW songs. In my concerts I try to avoid covers and perform only my songs :)


What city did you grow up? Where do you live?

I was born in Mazeikiai, Lithuania, and there I grew up. I`ve graduated my BA and MA communication studies in second biggest town in Lithuania – Kaunas, where I`m living, working and creating my music at the moment.


How long do you play music?

At school time I started singing in a youth jazz band, at university – playing guitar and singing in rock cover band and from 2013 I strongly decided to start creating my own music as Renata Novo. So... It`s around 15 years for singing and 8 years for playing guitar.


Is what you studied music or did you learn on your own?

The basics of singing I learnt while singing in youth jazz band, my voice got stronger singing in rock band, so now I can use this knowledge for my own music. My BA and MA studies are not related to music, but communication & advertising. Maybe that`s why I give so much importance for word and lyrics of the songs. Every my song has a story: from my life, from movies, from books, from dreams, etc. I like telling these stories to the audience during my concerts.


What are the artists who gave you the desire to do your job and what artists do you like listening to?

I started playing guitar because of the Irish band "The Cranberries" song "Zombie". I think this band is my musical mother, who inspired and gave birth for my first songs. These days I listen to various types of music from rock, punk to jazz, reggae.

Is alone or with band for recording your songs?

Now we are two: me for vocals and Marius Sabutis for guitar (he is the guy in the BalconyTV video). I create lyrics and music, Marius helps to develop. This period is for creating songs and presenting them in acoustic concerts. If audience likes them – we can record them for an album. First album is our future plan.


Have you play? or envisaged live show soon? In what country?

At the moment we have concerts only in Lithuania – follow my Facebook page and you won`t miss my concerts. When we gonna release our first album – then you can think about concerts abroad. Everything is in the future :)


Now about your glasses. Like many singers, you wear glasses instead of contact lenses, when did you choose to wear them? Is it for fashion or is that it happened naturally?

I`m wearing glasses from school time, cause I have myopia. Of course like all children in the beggining I didin`t like them, but now it`s really nice detail which helps to stand out from the crowd. Usually I choose different frame colors when changing glasses. At some period I had burgundy, green, stripped, now – black with yellow sides :) Glasses are cool! Now it`s almost part of my body :)

Hannah Winkler

Hannah Winkler is a folk-rock singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York, born in Bethesda, Maryland.

She's been playing piano since her first grade, then she picked up guitar and taught herself at age 14. She also wrote poetry and sang in some choirs.

She started writing her own songs after she left college and her first song is called 'The Paper Plate Song'. Her voice is beautiful and it is impressive to see her play guitar.

Hannah recorded her first self-titled EP with the amazing song 'Dear Love' in 2008. Her most recent single is 'Hide it Away' she produced with Theo Katzman (2012).

Ellow - Eline Van Hooff

Ellow is a pop/folk/indie band from Eindhoven, Netherlands, created by Eline Van Hooff and Rik Janssen.

The duo doesn’t want to conform to the conventional musical laws. Songs will be posted on Youtube on an average of two new songs a month. After that they will be arranged to be suited to be performed live as a duo on stage. They play ukelele's, piano's, guitars, basses and an occasional kazoo. Eline started singing when she was 8 in a choir. When she was 12 she got her grandmothers piano and took classes. She went to music school when she was 18. She have always made her own music with friends and now with Rik.
